Syrah, a Rhone variety, is well suited to our Central California climate. The cool ocean breeze and moderate climate produces a lively and complex Syrah of intense flavor and aroma. Our 2002 Syrah is no exception showcasing exceptional flavors of blackberry, deep cherry, spice and hints of
plum--what you would expect in a Northern Rhone style Syrah. Other aromas that you’ll find are pepper, smoke, sage, and hints of chocolate. The finish is long -- it is a robust wine yet delicate enough to
accompany most foods.
Our grapes were sourced solely from Pacific Vineyard located in Edna Valley, San Luis Obispo County. Eight tons were harvested on November 4, 2002. Sugar content at harvest was approximately 26 Brix. The fruit was destemmed then soaked at room temperature for 48 hours for maximum color
extraction. Twelve days of fermentation followed in small, open top containers with one-to-two punch downs per day. We then barrel aged for 16 months in 20% new French oak with one racking prior to bottling. Bottled April 14, 2004, fined with egg whites and light filtered.
This wonderful wine pairs best with traditional red-wine dishes such as lamb, beef dishes, or sausage as well as wild game.
Sensory Evaluation: Aromatic, cherry, dark fruit, white chocolate, vanilla, spice, slight earth and gamey flavors, long finish.
